Margate: the gallery, the Shell Grotto, the caves, the harbour and Quex

Turner Contemporary, Dreamland, the Shell Grotto, Margate Caves, the Crab Museum, the Harbour Arm, Walpole Bay and Quex, with winter days.

Birchington

This guide helps you plan a visit to Margate in the winter months: a seafront gallery, an amusement park, two underground sites, a small museum, the harbour and the tidal pool, plus one trip out to Quex Park at Birchington. The cards below link to each place’s InKent page. Winter opening is thinner than summer, and several places keep to a few days a week.

Turner Contemporary

Turner Contemporary is a public art gallery on Margate’s seafront, at Rendezvous. Its own site lists free entry and welcomes donations. On 29 October 2026 it listed Sophie Calle: Something Missing? running to 24 January 2027, and a display built around Turner’s oil sketch of waves breaking at Margate. Winter hours (November to March) are Wednesday to Sunday and bank holidays, 11am to 5pm, and the gallery lists a closure for exhibition changeover from 25 January to 12 February 2027.

  • Access: step-free access, a lift between floors and a ramp beside the entrance steps. Wheelchairs and portable stools can be borrowed. Blue Badge holders can park free on Rendezvous for up to three hours.
  • Suits: a rainy-day stop that costs nothing to enter.

Dreamland

Dreamland is a seafront amusement park with vintage-style rides, a roller disco and an events hall. Its own site lists free entry, with rides paid for by token or wristband. Visit Thanet lists rides from £3 each and a Mega Ride wristband at £24.99. The park lists daily opening from 24 October to 1 November 2026, 10.30am to 4pm, with rides from 11am. Outside holidays and event days we could not find published winter hours, so check its opening-times page before you travel.

The Shell Grotto and Margate Caves

The Shell Grotto, on Grotto Hill, is an underground passage and chamber covered in millions of shells set in mosaic patterns. Its own site lists its origins as a mystery and says debate about them has raged ever since it came to light. The site lists Thursday to Sunday, 11am to 4pm, and daily 10am to 5pm from 21 October to 1 November 2026. A Visit Thanet autumn page gives Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm, so the days differ and the owner’s page is the one to check. Its adult price is £6 on its own site.

Margate Caves are chalk caves under Northdown Road, visited on a self-guided walk with cave guides on hand. The visitor centre has a cafe and shop, and the caves host Christmas at the Caves from 28 November to 23 December 2026, when Art Fund lists no standard entry. The caves’ own site lists Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm, last entry 4.30pm, and an adult price of £5. Visit Thanet’s seasonal opening page gives the same days, but an Art Fund listing shows Friday to Sunday, 11am to 4pm, from November to Easter, so confirm before you go.

  • Access: the caves are not accessible to wheelchair users or anyone with significant mobility problems, with two sets of stairs and then a steep, narrow tunnel with an uneven floor. The visitor centre is widely accessible. Assistance dogs are welcome.
  • Shell Grotto access: its own site says access includes two sets of stairs and an uneven floor, with no step-free access, and that it is not suitable for wheelchairs, walking frames or anyone with reduced mobility. Ring it on 01843 220008 with questions.
  • Suits: anyone happy with steps and a cool, enclosed space.

Crab Museum

The Crab Museum is a small independent museum above the Pie Factory gallery at 9 Broad Street. It tells the story of crabs and the creatures of the Kent coast. Its own site says it will never charge an entry fee, and it lists Friday to Sunday, 11am to 5pm, with last entry at 4.30pm. The museum is on the first floor, so read its accessibility page if that matters.

Margate Harbour Arm

The Harbour Arm is a stone pier. Visit Thanet gives its building dates as 1812 to 1815, with a lighthouse rebuilt in 1955 and a bronze shell lady statue at the end. Cafes, bars and small galleries line it, and Droit House at its base is the Visitor Information Centre. No admission price is published, and each cafe, bar and gallery keeps its own hours. Visit Thanet lists nearby parking from £1.80 for an hour from November to March.

Walpole Bay Tidal Pool

Walpole Bay Tidal Pool was built in 1937 and is Grade II listed, according to Historic England’s list entry. Visit Thanet gives its size as about four acres. It is open access with no published hours, and Thanet District Council operates it. Visit Thanet lists no toilets, lifeguards or on-site parking and says the water can get rough at high tide. The council has planned a cafe and toilets at Hodges Gap, but we could not confirm that they have opened, so check conditions and the council’s page before you swim.

Quex House and the Powell-Cotton Museum

Quex Park is at Birchington, a separate trip from the seafront. One full-day ticket covers the Powell-Cotton natural history museum, Quex House, a Regency house visited by guided tour, and the gardens, with re-entry. The museum’s own site lists an adult price of £9. Its season runs to 1 November 2026, Friday to Sunday and bank holidays, 11am to 4pm, and Wednesday to Sunday in school holidays, including the half term from Wednesday 28 October to Sunday 1 November. A Cosy Quex House Christmas runs on weekends from 21 November to 13 December, and we found no published winter hours outside those dates. It has step-free access at the main entrance and through most areas, a portable ramp for Quex House and a manual wheelchair.

Choosing between them

  • Art and history: Turner Contemporary, the Shell Grotto and Quex.
  • Free entry: Turner Contemporary and the Crab Museum list it on their own sites, and Dreamland does for its gates. The Harbour Arm publishes no admission price.
  • Underground: the Shell Grotto and the caves, with stairs at both.
  • Seafront walking: the Harbour Arm and the tidal pool.
  • Weekdays: check first. Turner Contemporary, the Crab Museum and the Shell Grotto are closed on some of them.

Planning the day

Several places keep Wednesday to Sunday hours, so a weekend gives you more places to choose from. Turner Contemporary, the Harbour Arm and Dreamland are all on the seafront, and the Crab Museum is on Broad Street. We have no distances between them, so check a map. Turner Contemporary’s getting-here page covers parking and Blue Badge spaces.
