About Queenborough

Queenborough is on the Isle of Sheppey, in the borough of Swale, and Swale Borough Council provides local services from its offices at Swale House in Sittingbourne.

The town was planned around a royal castle. The Kent Archaeological Society says Edward III began the castle in 1361, named the new town after his queen, Philippa, and granted it a borough charter in 1368. Kent’s Historic Environment Record describes a concentric castle built between 1361 and 1375 and demolished in 1650. Only the moat and grass-covered foundations remain, and the site is a scheduled monument. Historic England’s 2006 historic area appraisal of Queenborough covers how the town grew up around it. Visit Swale’s Sheppey leaflet covers sailing and the Isle of Harty Trail.

Getting there and around

Queenborough station is on the Sheerness line between Sittingbourne and Sheerness-on-Sea, and Kent’s Historic Environment Record dates it to 1860. Southeastern’s journey planner gives current routes, times and fares, and journey times depend on the service and the London station.

By road, Visit Swale says the Isle of Sheppey is reached by the Sheppey Crossing (A249) from the M2 and the A2 at Sittingbourne.
