Town guide
Rainham is part of the Medway unitary authority, so Medway Council provides local services. It is an area within Medway rather than a separate local authority, and the council lists it as one of five Medway town centres, alongside Chatham, Gillingham, Rochester and Strood. Visit Medway describes Rainham as a mix of modern and village character, on the A2 between Gillingham and Newington.
The Church of St Margaret on the High Street is Grade I listed, according to Historic England, and Visit Medway says it dominates the skyline.
Riverside Country Park, on the Medway Estuary near Rainham, covers 100 hectares according to Visit Medway, and has a cafe. Cozenton Park on Bloors Lane has play equipment, a skate park and football pitches, according to Medway Council.
The town centre is the focus of a council plan called Rainham Reimagined. Medway Council’s page names three proposed projects: Orchard Square, a reimagined central square; High Street connections, covering crossings, pavements and shopfronts; and Three Trails, a set of walking routes. Check the council’s Rainham Reimagined page for what is under way.
Rainham station is on Station Road and is served by Southeastern and Thameslink. Kent’s Historic Environment Record says it opened in 1858 on the Chatham to Faversham line. Check Southeastern’s journey planner for current routes, times and fares.
Medway Council’s Station Road car park in Rainham takes cash, contactless or RingGo, according to the council’s directory. Check the council’s parking pages for tariffs, hours and closures before you travel.
