About Swanscombe

Swanscombe is in the borough of Dartford in Kent. Dartford Borough Council is the district council, and Swanscombe and Greenhithe Town Council covers the area at parish level. The town council has 13 councillors elected every four years across three wards: Greenhithe, Knockhall and Swanscombe.

Swanscombe is known for an early find. Kent County Council’s Historic Environment Record says three parts of the same skull were found separately in 1935, 1936 and 1955 at Barnfield Pit, a quarry in Swanscombe. Natural England lists the Swanscombe Skull Site as a National Nature Reserve. The Kent record also says replicas of the skull are on display at Dartford Museum.

The Swanscombe Peninsula, on the Thames, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Natural England confirmed the designation in November 2021, citing nationally important invertebrates and breeding birds, plant populations and geological features.

Ebbsfleet Garden City

The Ebbsfleet Development Corporation was set up by the government to speed up delivery of up to 15,000 homes in north Kent. It became the local planning authority for its area on 1 July 2015, and it marked the completion of the 5,000th home in December 2025. The area straddles the Dartford and Gravesham boroughs, and Kent County Council remains the highways authority for its roads.

Getting there and around

Swanscombe station is on the High Street and is managed by Southeastern, and Thameslink trains to Kentish Town also call there. Its station page lists ticket office hours and facilities, and journey times to London depend on the service, so check Southeastern’s journey planner before you travel.

Questions about Swanscombe

What is the Swanscombe Skull?
The Swanscombe Skull is a set of three parts of one skull found separately in 1935, 1936 and 1955 at Barnfield Pit, a quarry in Swanscombe, according to Kent County Council's Historic Environment Record. Natural England lists the Swanscombe Skull Site as a National Nature Reserve, and replicas are on display at Dartford Museum.
Which council covers Swanscombe?
Swanscombe is in the borough of Dartford, so Dartford Borough Council provides local services. Swanscombe and Greenhithe Town Council covers the area at parish level, with 13 councillors across three wards: Greenhithe, Knockhall and Swanscombe. The Ebbsfleet Development Corporation is the planning authority for the garden city area.
How do I get from Swanscombe to London?
Swanscombe station, on the High Street, is managed by Southeastern. Which London stations you reach, and how long it takes, depends on the service. Use Southeastern's station page and journey planner for current departures and fares, and check the ticket office hours, which are limited.
What is the Swanscombe Peninsula?
The Swanscombe Peninsula is a stretch of land on the Thames that Natural England confirmed as a Site of Special Scientific Interest in November 2021. The designation covers nationally important invertebrates and breeding birds, plant populations and geological features. The new site takes in the earlier Bakers Hole SSSI.
Is Swanscombe part of Ebbsfleet Garden City?
NHS England describes Ebbsfleet Garden City as embracing the existing communities of Swanscombe and Northfleet. The Ebbsfleet Development Corporation has been the planning authority for its own defined area since 1 July 2015, and that area is set by a map rather than by town names. Dartford Borough Council is still the council for Swanscombe, so check the corporation's map to see who handles planning for a particular address.
