About Gravesend

Gravesend sits on the south bank of the River Thames in Kent. It is in the borough of Gravesham, and Gravesham Borough Council is based at the Civic Centre in Windmill Street, Gravesend. The river has shaped the place for centuries, and the Town Pier on the waterfront is a visible reminder. Historic England lists the cast iron pier at Grade II* and dates it to 1831 to 1834.

Gravesend is also linked to Pocahontas. She died here in March 1617, at the start of her journey home to Virginia, and a bronze statue of her stands in the churchyard of St George’s Church.

Getting there and around

Gravesend station has high-speed Southeastern trains to London St Pancras International, which the operator gives as 24 minutes, with slower services to London Bridge and Charing Cross taking just over an hour. Times change, so check the operator’s timetable before you travel.

If you are driving, Gravesham Borough Council runs public car parks in Gravesend. Charges apply Monday to Saturday from 8am to 6pm, including bank holidays. Some car parks are pay on arrival by machine or RingGo, and others use number plate recognition and charge when you leave. The council’s car parks page lists current tariffs.

Shopping and what’s on

Gravesend Borough Market is owned by Gravesham Borough Council. Beer and Feast ran the street food venue Hatch there from 2024, but announced in November 2025 that it would stop running the market, and the council said the main building would stay closed while it looks at longer-term uses. In October 2026 the council advertised for a new leaseholder. Check the council’s news pages for the latest.
