About Herne Bay

Herne Bay is in the Canterbury district, and Canterbury City Council is its local authority.

The Clock Tower on Central Parade is listed at Grade II by Historic England (list entry 1085006), which records that it was erected in 1836 to 1837 to a design by Edwin J Dangerfield in Portland stone. Kent’s Historic Environment Record says a pier built in 1873 was incorporated into the present structure in 1896 to 1899, and that the pier is now reduced to a length of about 150 metres.

English Heritage lists entry to Reculver Towers and Roman Fort, about three miles east of Herne Bay, as free, and the interior of the North Tower opens only on select days from April to October. A charged public car park next to the site is not managed by English Heritage. Check its page before you go.
