Town guide
Hythe is a town in the Folkestone and Hythe district. Historic England’s list entry for Hythe Town Hall, on the High Street, gives the district as Folkestone and Hythe, and the district council’s town and parish election pages list four Hythe wards: East, North, South and West.
St Leonard’s Church, on Oak Walk, is listed at Grade I by Historic England (list entry 1068961), and Kent’s Historic Environment Record dates the church to about 1100, with later work in the 12th, 13th, 14th and 18th centuries. The church has an ossuary beneath the chancel, so check the church’s own website for when it can be visited.
The Royal Military Canal runs through the town. Kent’s Historic Environment Record says it was built during the Napoleonic Wars between 1804 and 1809 in response to the threat of invasion, and Historic England schedules sections of it at Hythe, including the stretch from Town Bridge to Twiss Road Bridge (list entry 1005116). The Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway runs between Hythe and Dungeness, and Visit Folkestone and Hythe describes it as a 13.5 mile line.
The Confederation of the Cinque Ports lists Hythe among its member towns. Hythe Town Council’s venue-hire page describes the Town Hall as suitable for ceremonies, exhibitions, meetings and weddings.
