About Canterbury

Canterbury is a city in Kent, in the Canterbury district, and Canterbury City Council is the local authority. The district also takes in the coastal towns of Whitstable and Herne Bay, which have their own pages on InKent.

UNESCO lists Canterbury Cathedral, St Augustine’s Abbey and St Martin’s Church together as one World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1988. The Beaney House of Art and Knowledge, at 18 High Street, combines a museum, library and art gallery, and entry is free, although some special exhibitions and events may charge. Visit Canterbury’s listing says it also houses a visitor information centre. Check each site’s own website for opening times and tickets.

Getting there and around

Canterbury has two railway stations, Canterbury West and Canterbury East, and Southeastern’s High Speed services call at Canterbury West. Check National Rail for which operators call at each station and for current journey times.

Canterbury City Council lists park and ride sites at Wincheap, Sturry Road and New Dover Road, and publishes the off-street parking order that covers its car parks in the city. Fares, hours and which sites are running can change, so check the council’s park and ride and car parks pages before you travel.

Use this page to browse local businesses in and around Canterbury, see what is on across the district and find things to do beyond the city centre. Every listing is researched and checked by us before it goes live, and the Explore Kent menu takes you to neighbouring towns. It also covers the villages around Canterbury as well as the coast, so a search for a trade or a day out can span the whole district.
