About Paddock Wood

Paddock Wood is a town and civil parish in the borough of Tunbridge Wells. Paddock Wood Town Council has its offices in the Podmore Building on St Andrews Field, and Tunbridge Wells Borough Council has its offices at the Town Hall on Mount Pleasant Road in Tunbridge Wells. Visit Tunbridge Wells lists Paddock Wood among the places to explore in the borough.

The hop industry shaped the town. Paddock Wood Town Council says it developed as a settlement in the second half of the 19th century as a result of the local hop industry, and Visit Tunbridge Wells says it grew up around the railway in 1842, which gave growers access to London and the coast. Visit Tunbridge Wells also notes that pickers used to come to the area on an annual summer ‘holiday’, and oast houses can still be seen around the town. Kent Community Rail Partnership says the station took the name Paddock Wood in 1844, when the branch line to Maidstone West opened. Kent’s Historic Environment Record also holds a record for former hop pickers’ huts south east of Greenfields Farm in Paddock Wood.
