About Westerham

Westerham is a town in the Sevenoaks district of Kent, and Sevenoaks District Council is its district council.

Westerham has two links with national figures, and both are looked after by the National Trust. Quebec House on Quebec Square was the childhood home of General James Wolfe, according to the National Trust, which owns it. Chartwell, on the southern outskirts of Westerham, was bought by Winston and Clementine Churchill in 1922, and the Trust now presents it as the family home and garden.

In the town, a bronze statue of General Wolfe by Francis Derwent Wood was unveiled in 1911. Historic England lists it at Grade II*, and Art UK records Westerham Town Council as its owner. Quebec House itself is also a listed building (list entry 1244133).

Squerryes Court is a house and garden in Westerham. Kent’s Historic Environment Record says the house was built in 1681 by Sir Nicholas Crisp, and Historic England lists it at Grade I and registers the gardens at Grade II. Check the house’s own website before planning a visit.
