About Tunbridge Wells

Tunbridge Wells is a town in west Kent, in the borough of Tunbridge Wells. Tunbridge Wells Borough Council has its offices at the Town Hall on Mount Pleasant Road.

The town grew up around a spring. Visit Tunbridge Wells says Dudley, Lord North, found the chalybeate water in 1606 on his way back to London, and the spring is still at the Pantiles. The History of Parliament notes that the main account of the discovery was written by an eighteenth-century historian, and that a spring 1606 stay at Eridge is hard to square with Lord North’s attendance in Parliament, so treat 1606 as the traditional date. Visit Tunbridge Wells says that in 1909 Edward VII officially recognised the town’s popularity with its royal and aristocratic visitors, and it has been Royal Tunbridge Wells since. The town’s museum is now The Amelia Scott on Mount Pleasant Road, which has free entry, and a 2026 Decorative Arts Society grant is funding a display there of Tunbridge ware, the decorated wooden marquetry the town is known for.

Getting there and around

Tunbridge Wells station is on Mount Pleasant Road, and Southeastern’s station page lists its facilities and ticket office hours. Check National Rail for which operators call and for current journey times.

If you are driving, Tunbridge Wells Borough Council says you can pay by phone with the RingGo app in most of its car parks, including Meadow Road, the Pantiles, Royal Victoria Place, Torrington, Town Hall Yard and Union House. Tariffs and opening hours change, so check the council’s car parks pages before you travel.
