About Minster

Minster is on the Isle of Sheppey, in the borough of Swale, and Swale Borough Council provides local services from its offices at Swale House in Sittingbourne. This page covers Minster on Sheppey, also written Minster-on-Sea or Minster in Sheppey, and not the Minster in Thanet.

Minster Abbey stands in the town. Kent’s Historic Environment Record says the priory was founded in the 7th century by Sexburga, widow of Ercombert of Kent. The church of St Mary and St Sexburga and the Abbey Gatehouse are what remain of the abbey, according to the West Sheppey parish website. The Abbey Gatehouse is Grade I listed and now holds a local history museum on Union Road. Opening times can be limited, so check before you visit.
