Minster, Leysdown and Elmley on the Isle of Sheppey

Minster Abbey, Minster Leas and Leysdown beaches and Elmley nature reserve on the Isle of Sheppey, with dog rules, parking and opening notes.

Leysdown-on-Sea

This guide covers four places on the Isle of Sheppey away from Sheerness: an abbey church at Minster, two beaches on the north and east coast, and a nature reserve you visit by ticket. It sorts them by what you want to do and by the rules each owner publishes, since dogs, parking and opening times differ. InKent lists Leysdown Beach under Leysdown-on-Sea, which it groups with Minster. The cards below link to each place’s InKent page.

Minster Abbey

Minster Abbey, the church of St Mary and St Sexburga, is on the hill at Minster-on-Sea on Vicarage Road. It was founded as a Saxon nunnery and stands beside the Abbey Gatehouse Museum. The West Sheppey parish page lists the church doors as open to all who wish to enter every day, for a few hours: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9am to 2pm, Tuesday 9am to noon, Thursday 11am to 2pm, Saturday 10am to 2pm and Sunday noon to 2pm, with a weekly Sunday service at 11am. Those are the hours listed on 29 October 2026, so check the parish page before you go, because they may change.

  • Cost: the parish page lists no admission charge. The Abbey Gatehouse Museum beside it has its own hours and charges, so check its website.
  • Suits: anyone interested in Sheppey’s early history, and people attending a service.

Minster Leas Beach

Minster Leas Beach is on The Leas, on the north coast of Sheppey. It is a gently sloping beach of sand and shingle with a wide promenade, outdoor gym equipment and views over the estuary. Visit Swale lists a 50-space car park at the end of the Leas road and a second car park 200 metres away, postcode ME12 2LT. The 367 bus stops near the beach.

  • Dogs: dogs are not permitted on the beach between 1 May and 30 September. An 800-metre dog walking stretch is marked.
  • Access: steps lead down the grassy bank to the promenade, and the bathing area has steps and ramps at intervals. Disabled toilets open with a RADAR key.
  • Suits: families, and walkers using the promenade.

Leysdown Beach

Leysdown Beach is at the eastern end of Sheppey, on Leysdown Road. Visit Swale describes it as a shallow sandy family beach looking out to the Red Sands Forts, in a small resort with shops and arcades. The nearest car park has 269 spaces about 200 metres away, and the 362 bus stops on Leysdown Road. Seafront toilets are open from Easter to September, and RNLI lifeguards cover the beach in summer only.

  • Access: there are two access points to the beach, with steps and ramps with handrails.
  • Suits: families who want a resort with shops and arcades beside the beach.

Elmley National Nature Reserve

Elmley is a family-run National Nature Reserve of 3,300 acres at Kingshill Farm, with a two-mile entry track, nature trails, marsh birds and hares. You visit by ticket, with a charge per adult. Numbers are limited, so booking ahead is recommended, and prices are shown at booking. The reserve is open on selected days each week. On 29 October 2026 its page listed Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, but the reserve publishes a weekly opening calendar, so check it before you go.

  • Dogs: only registered assistance dogs are allowed.
  • Suits: people who want to look for birds and wildlife and are happy to book.

Choosing between them

  • With a dog: Minster Leas has a marked dog walking stretch and a summer ban elsewhere on the beach. Elmley allows assistance dogs only. Visit Swale says dogs are banned from Leysdown Beach between May and September.
  • Tickets: Elmley is ticketed and prices are shown at booking. No admission charge is listed for the beaches or the abbey.
  • Parking: Minster Leas has a 50-space car park and a second one 200 metres away. Leysdown’s nearest car park has 269 spaces.
  • Winter: lifeguards cover Leysdown in summer only and Minster Leas has no lifeguard service, Leysdown’s seafront toilets open from Easter to September, and the abbey’s hours may change.

Planning the day

Sheppey is spread out, and the sources list separate car parks and bus routes for each beach, so plan each place as its own stop. Minster Abbey and Minster Leas are both in Minster-on-Sea, and the parish lists the abbey doors as open every day for a few hours up to 2pm, so check that day’s hours and combine them. Leysdown is the beach beside a small resort with shops and arcades. Elmley needs a booked ticket on a day that is on its calendar.

In summer, check the dog rule at Minster Leas before you set out, and remember that Elmley allows only registered assistance dogs.

Getting there

Visit Swale lists the 367 bus near Minster Leas and the 362 bus on Leysdown Road. Check the operator’s timetable for current times. The four places are separate trips, so plan each one rather than treating them as a single walk. For Elmley, book first and use the directions on the reserve’s website.
