This guide helps you plan time outdoors around Ashford and Tenterden: a heathland, a lakeside park, a large woodland, two national nature reserves and, in Tenterden, a steam railway, a church and a small town reserve. The cards below link to each place’s InKent page. InKent lists Hothfield and Hamstreet under Ashford, Challock and Wye under Kennington, and the Tenterden places under Tenterden. Most of these are open-access sites with no staff, so there are few opening hours to quote.

Hothfield Heathlands

Hothfield Heathlands is an 86 hectare reserve off the A20, managed by Kent Wildlife Trust on behalf of Ashford Borough Council. It is a Local Nature Reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, with four waymarked circular routes and boardwalks across the wetter ground. The Trust lists it as open at all times. It lists a 500m all-weather Triangle Trail from the car park with a smooth, even surface, and says other paths are natural compacted sand, uneven in places and wetter in wet weather. Grazing animals are on site at various times of year, so keep 10 metres away, although the Trust says its Highland cows have been moved off site for now. Dogs must be on leads across open habitat from March, and the Trust’s page gives the end date as both the end of August and September, so check the signs. There are no toilets.

Conningbrook Lakes Country Park

Conningbrook Lakes Country Park is a 34 hectare former quarry beside the Julie Rose Stadium, with lakes, wildlife areas managed by Kent Wildlife Trust and public art including The Birds by Julia Clarke. The Trust lists walking access all year, and Ashford Borough Council lists the park as open seven days a week, early morning to early evening, so confirm times with Freedom Leisure, which runs the stadium. Dogs must be on a lead at all times and kept out of the water. The Trust lists a wheelchair-accessible tarmac path from the main car park, an accessible toilet, and says other paths are grass and become muddy in winter. No entry charge is listed.

King’s Wood, Challock

King’s Wood is a 588 hectare Forestry England woodland in the Kent Downs, with sweet chestnut coppice and beech groves. Forestry England lists it as open all day, every day, with walking on public footpaths, a mountain bike route and horse riding on gravel tracks without a permit. Parking charges with number plate enforcement apply from 1 October 2026, from £2.00 for up to an hour, payable through RingGo. Forestry England lists no designated accessible parking spaces.

Wye National Nature Reserve

Wye National Nature Reserve is around 134 hectares of chalk grassland and woodland on steep coombes, about 2 km south east of Wye and 6 km north east of Ashford. Natural England lists around 21 orchid species and views over Romney Marsh, the Weald and the Channel coast. Kent Downs describes a circular nature trail and several public footpaths, and lists the reserve as open all hours. There are two car parks with voluntary charges payable through RingGo. The slopes are steep, livestock graze the site, and we found no access statement.

Ham Street Woods National Nature Reserve

Ham Street Woods is a 97 hectare remnant of ancient Wealden forest, part of Orlestone Forest, with three waymarked trails of 2.5 to 5 km. Natural England lists the main entrance at the end of Bourne Lane, where a small car park has voluntary charges payable through RingGo, with other car parks in the village. Ham Street station is under 0.5 km away. Natural England has noted that the tracks become very wet and muddy in winter. No opening hours are published, and we found no access statement.

Kent and East Sussex Railway, Tenterden

The Kent and East Sussex Railway runs heritage steam and diesel trains from Tenterden Town Station through the Rother Valley to Northiam and Bodiam. Trains run on selected dates rather than daily, so check its timetable calendar. On 29 October 2026 the winter dates included a Southern Through the Ages gala on 7 and 8 November, and Santa Specials from 29 November. The 2026 adult fare on its timetable page is £30.00 bought online in advance or £33.00 on arrival. The railway lists Blue Badge parking at Tenterden Town and Northiam, accessible toilets at Tenterden, Northiam and Bodiam, and a ramped coach with eight wheelchair spaces booked by phone or email.

St Mildred’s Church, Tenterden

St Mildred’s is the parish church at the centre of Tenterden, off the High Street. The church’s own listing says it is usually open from 9am to at least 4pm every day, and the National Churches Trust lists it as open daily, 9am to 5pm. The Trust describes a 14th-century nave with later aisles, a 15th-century tower, the Whitfeld family monument and a Sanctus bell of about 1400. We found no price or access statement.

Kiln Field Nature Reserve, Tenterden

Kiln Field is a 4.5-acre nature reserve off Abbott Way, south-east of Tenterden and just south of Appledore Road. A former 1960s orchard, it is now a mix of woodland, scrub, wildflower meadow, a balancing pond with a pond-dipping platform and a stream, with footpaths. Tenterden Town Council manages it with Kent Wildlife Trust and says the reserve is open to the public. The council’s page gives no opening hours, price or postcode, so check before you go.

Choosing between them

  • Heath, wetland and boardwalks: Hothfield Heathlands and Conningbrook Lakes.
  • Woods and trails: King’s Wood and Ham Street Woods.
  • Downland views: Wye National Nature Reserve, which is steep.
  • Step-free options listed: the Triangle Trail at Hothfield, the tarmac path at Conningbrook, and the railway’s ramped coach.
  • A town stop: St Mildred’s and Kiln Field.

Planning the day

Wear boots from autumn: Natural England notes that the Ham Street tracks become very wet and muddy in winter, and Conningbrook’s grass paths become muddy. We have no distances between the places, so check a map before you decide what to link.

Getting there

King’s Wood and Wye list car parks with charges, and Ham Street station is under 0.5 km from the Ham Street Woods entrance. The Kent and East Sussex Railway runs from Tenterden Town Station. Use the operators’ journey planners for current train and bus services.
