St George’s Church and Pocahontas Statue

Gravesend's 1733 parish church, burial place of Pocahontas, with a bronze statue of her in the churchyard garden and Virginia memorial windows.

About St George’s Church and Pocahontas Statue

St George’s is the parish church at the heart of Gravesend town centre. Pocahontas was buried in the chancel of the earlier church in March 1617; that building burned down in 1727 in a fire that destroyed much of the old town, and the present church opened in 1733. The churchyard was laid out as the Princess Pocahontas Garden in 1958, when a life-sized bronze statue (a replica of the 1907 Jamestown sculpture by William Ordway Partridge) was unveiled. Inside are a memorial tablet and windows given by the Colonial Dames of America.

Services are held on Sundays at 10am and 6pm and Wednesdays at 10am, and tours of the church can be arranged on request to the Rector. Two public car parks adjoin the church, which sits behind the St George’s Centre.
