Millennium country park above the Darent Valley with chalk grassland, an orchard of 150 fruit varieties, a Saxon burial site and a play area.
Darenth Country Park opened in 2002 on the grounds of the former Darenth asylum, on the northern edge of the North Downs overlooking the Darent Valley. Part of it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its chalk grassland, home to the rare Watling Street thistle. Its traditional orchard has over 150 varieties of apple, pear, plum, cherry and cobnut, and a scheduled ancient monument marks a Saxon burial ground where the Darenth Bowl (now in Dartford Borough Museum’s collection, though the museum says it is not on display at the moment) was found. There is a play area, a sculpture by Andy McKeown, a picnic area by the car park and a mix of paved and unpaved paths including cycle routes. The Arrow Riding Centre for disabled riders is on site.
The park unlocks at 6.45am; locking starts at 5pm from November to January, later from mid-February and through the summer.
