About Cranbrook

Cranbrook is a town in the Weald of Kent, in the Tunbridge Wells district. Visit Tunbridge Wells places it 12 miles east of Royal Tunbridge Wells. Its parish council is Cranbrook and Sissinghurst Parish Council, based at the Old Fire Station on Stone Street, according to the Society of Local Council Clerks.

Visit Tunbridge Wells says Cranbrook was once a centre for cloth weaving and that many of its buildings date from the 15th to the 19th centuries. Cranbrook School says it was founded in 1518 by John Blubery and six other members of Cranbrook Parish.

St Dunstan’s Church, often called the Cathedral of the Weald, is listed at Grade I (list entry 1099931). The Kent Historic Environment Record describes a parish church of the late 13th to early 16th centuries, restored around 1863. The National Churches Trust says its Perpendicular style reflects the prosperity that 15th-century clothiers and Flemish weavers brought, and the church says the building is usually open every day.

Union Mill is a smock mill built in 1814 by the millwright James Humphrey. It is listed at Grade I (list entry 1356175), and the Kent record says its machinery is intact and in working order. The mill is managed by volunteers of the Cranbrook Windmill Association, and its website lists public opening from the beginning of April to the end of September. Kent County Council, which owns the mill, plans to sell its eight windmills. Cranbrook Museum on Carriers Road is run by the Cranbrook Museum and Local History Society, and its website lists free admission and an April to October season.

Sissinghurst Castle Garden lies in the same parish, and the Kent record says the National Trust has owned it since 1967.

Getting there and around

Arriva’s route 5 runs from Maidstone to Hawkhurst Moor, with stops at Staplehurst, Sissinghurst and Cranbrook, according to Arriva’s service page. Southeastern’s Staplehurst station page shows departures to London Charing Cross and Ashford International, among others. Cranbrook had its own railway station until 1961, when the branch line to Paddock Wood closed, according to the Kent record. Check the operators for current times.
