About Gillingham

Gillingham is part of the Medway unitary authority, so Medway Council provides local services. The council lists Gillingham as one of five Medway town centres, alongside Chatham, Rainham, Rochester and Strood.

Gillingham Football Club says it was formed as New Brompton at the Napier Arms in May 1893, and that the Gillingham name came in time for the 1912/13 season. The club plays at Priestfield, and its website has fixtures and ticket details.

Brompton Barracks is a military site in Gillingham. Historic England’s list entries date the main blocks of Brompton Barracks to 1804 to 1806, and the Royal Engineers Museum is on the barracks site on Prince Arthur Road. Check the museum’s own website for opening times and tickets.

On the waterfront, The Strand Lido and Leisure Park is on Pier Road. Medway Council says the lido opened in 1896 and describes it as the only remaining riverside tidal saltwater pool in the country. The lido is seasonal and bookable, so check the council’s Strand page for dates and sessions, along with what else the park offers.

Getting there and around

Gillingham station is on Railway Street and is served by Southeastern and Thameslink. Check Southeastern’s journey planner for current routes, times and fares.

Medway Council’s car park directory has a Gillingham section, which includes Medway Park, Croneen’s, Railside and The Strand. Payment methods differ by car park. For example, the council lists Medway Park as card or RingGo only, and Croneen’s as cash, contactless or RingGo. Check the council’s pages for tariffs and closures before you travel.
