Western Heights
Western Heights is a set of forts and ditches on high ground above Dover, built to defend the port. Historic England schedules the fortifications, Roman lighthouse and medieval chapel on the heights as a monument. The defences date from the Napoleonic period and were completed in the 1860s. The Grand Shaft, a triple staircase linking the heights to the town, is Grade II listed, and Drop Redoubt is in the care of English Heritage.
