Lydd

town · Folkestone and Hythe

Lydd is a town in the Folkestone and Hythe district. Folkestone and Hythe District Council’s 2023 election documents list Lydd Town Council, and the town council’s own website has pages on the district council, Kent County Council, the Lydd museum and the library. The Romney Marsh history website’s Lydd parish page covers Lydd, Dungeness, Lydd-on-Sea and part of Greatstone.

All Saints Church is listed at Grade I by Historic England (list entry 1068932), and Kent’s Historic Environment Record calls it the Cathedral of the Marsh. The record says the tower was built in the 15th century by Thomas Stanley, one of the senior masons at Canterbury Cathedral. The Confederation of the Cinque Ports lists Lydd among its member towns, and its limbs page lists Lydd under New Romney. Lydd Town Council’s Confederation of Cinque Ports page links to a Cinque Ports leaflet.

Lydd Town Museum is in the Old Fire Station on Queens Road. The museum’s own website says entry is free and donations are welcome. The museum is run by volunteers under the Friends of Lydd charity. Opening is seasonal, so check the museum’s own website before you visit. The Romney Marsh history website has a Lydd history page and a Lydd leaflet.

Getting there and around

Stagecoach South East publishes the bus timetables for services on Romney Marsh, and National Rail’s journey planner will show the nearest station for your trip. Services change, so check both before you travel, and check Lydd Town Council’s website for local notices.
