About Sheerness

Sheerness is on the Isle of Sheppey, in the borough of Swale, and Swale Borough Council provides local services from its offices at Swale House in Sittingbourne.

The Royal Navy dockyard shaped the town. The Sheerness Dockyard Preservation Trust dates the dockyard to 1665, and the Royal Navy closed it in 1960. The former Royal Dockyard Church in Blue Town was built in 1828 to a design by George Ledwell Taylor, and Historic England lists it at Grade II*. The Architectural Heritage Fund says it was left roofless by a fire in 2001, and it was restored and reopened in 2023. Check the Trust’s website for what is open. Visit Swale’s Sheppey leaflet covers sailing and the Isle of Harty Trail.

Getting there and around

Sheerness-on-Sea station is the end of the Sheerness line from Sittingbourne. Kent Rail records the station as opening in 1883. Southeastern’s journey planner gives current routes, times and fares, and journey times depend on the service and the London station.

By road, Visit Swale says the Isle of Sheppey is reached by the Sheppey Crossing (A249) from the M2 and the A2 at Sittingbourne.
