Maidstone’s museum, parks and days out

Maidstone Museum, Brenchley Gardens, Whatman Park, Mote Park and Cobtree, then Kent Life and Leeds Castle for a longer day out.

Sandling
Leeds

This guide sorts a Maidstone visit by what you want to do: a museum and gardens in the town centre, a park by the river or the lake, or a longer day out at Kent Life or Leeds Castle. InKent lists Kent Life and Cobtree Manor Park under Sandling and Leeds Castle under Leeds, both part of the Maidstone area. The cards below link to each place’s InKent page.

In the town centre: Maidstone Museum and Brenchley Gardens

Maidstone Museum is on St Faith’s Street, in Chillington Manor. Its collections cover Ancient Egypt, Japanese art, natural history and the Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment, whose museum is independent and housed inside the building. Entry is listed as free, though some temporary exhibitions may charge. The museum’s opening-times page on 29 October 2026 lists Wednesday to Saturday in low season (term time) and Monday to Saturday in high season (term time) and school holidays, all 10am to 4pm, so check the opening-times page before you go. There are access ramps, a flex step that converts to a lift, and a lift to the first floor, with accessible toilets on both floors. Electric mobility scooters cannot use the wheelchair lift.

Brenchley Gardens sit behind the museum, with a Victorian bandstand, the Cenotaph war memorial and the Royal Engineers statue. Maidstone Borough Council lists them as open every day from 7am until dusk, closed on Christmas Day with no pedestrian access when closed. The main entrance is behind the museum, with others from Station Road and the footpath from Maidstone East station. There are toilets, including disabled toilets.

  • Cost: no entry charge is listed for the gardens, and the museum lists free entry.
  • Suits: a short visit that is partly indoors, and anyone arriving by train.

By the river: Whatman Park

Whatman Park is a Green Flag park on the Medway, at Mill Meadow, St Peter’s Street. Visit Maidstone puts it half a mile from the town centre, and the council describes it as a 20-minute walk along the river. Facilities listed by the council include a raised boardwalk, the Jolly Roger toddler play area, an adventure play area, a skate park, a river stage, a boat wharf, two nature reserves and toilets, including disabled toilets. The River Park nature trail runs through the park. The council lists it as open daily from 8am to dusk, and no entry charge is listed.

Mote Park and Cobtree Manor Park

Mote Park is on Mote Avenue and is a Green Flag park of over 450 acres, with a 30-acre lake and woodland. Maidstone Borough Council lists a cafe, three children’s play areas, a natural woodland play area for ages 8 to 15, outdoor training equipment, a BMX track and toilets including disabled toilets. The park is open on foot at all times. The Mote Avenue car park is charged, opens at 8am and closes at 5pm from November to February, and there are 13 disabled bays there and 2 in School Lane. Check the council’s page for tariffs and for Christmas Day.

Cobtree Manor Park is on Forstal Road and covers over 50 acres on the site of the old Maidstone Zoo. It has an arboretum, a sculpture trail, a play area, marked walks and a cafe. The Cobtree Manor Estate Trust runs and funds it, and Maidstone Borough Council maintains it. The council lists the park as open from 7am until dusk. Cafe and toilet hours differ between listings, so check the council’s page for the current times. Parking is charged, so check the council’s page for the current tariff.

  • Cost: no entry charge is listed at either park. Parking is charged at both.
  • Suits: families, and anyone who wants a longer walk than the town centre allows.

Longer days out: Kent Life and Leeds Castle

Kent Life Heritage Farm Park is on Lock Lane, Sandling, and covers 28 acres off junction 6 of the M20. It has farm animals, a vintage village, play areas, a working oast house and the Kent Owl Academy. Tickets are booked online, and some event days carry a different admission charge. Its listed hours for November 2026 are 10am to 4pm or 5pm depending on the day, with different hours on event days, so check its calendar. Carers accompanying visitors with specific needs go free with proof.

Leeds Castle is at Broomfield, near Maidstone. It stands on two islands in a lake, in 500 acres of parkland with gardens, a maze and playgrounds, and it runs seasonal events. The Leeds Castle Foundation, a registered charity, runs it. Tickets are valid for 12 months. On 29 October 2026, an online adult Explorer ticket was £34.50 and a child ticket £24.50, so confirm on its website. The grounds were listed from 10am to 5pm and the castle from 10.30am to 3.30pm, with last entry at 3pm, and hours change on event days. Wheelchairs can be borrowed free, subject to availability, and a free mobility bus runs from near the ticket office except on special ticketed event days. The land train is not wheelchair accessible.

Choosing between them

  • Indoors: Maidstone Museum, and the castle at Leeds.
  • Free to enter, outdoors: Brenchley Gardens, Whatman Park, Mote Park and Cobtree Manor Park, none of which lists an entry charge.
  • Booked ticket needed: Kent Life and Leeds Castle.
  • Winter visits: check hours first. Mote Park’s car park closes at 5pm from November to February, and Cobtree’s cafe hours vary between listings.

Getting there

The council lists a footpath from Maidstone East station into Brenchley Gardens, whose main entrance is behind the museum. Mote Park, Cobtree and Leeds Castle are easier by car, and each charges for parking or entry, so check each page. Use the train operator’s journey planner for current services and fares.
